Bringing Home The Bacon!
Don brought home the Bacon winning the 2022 election and plans to repeat his success in 2024. Bacon has been reelected to office every year since sworn into office in 2017.
2022 Election
In 2022, Bacon beat out Tony Vargas, winning 51.3% of votes for Nebraska's second congressional district. Bacon had 112,663 votes, and Vargas had 106,807.
In 2022, Bacon's campaign finance reported $3,919,223 in receipts, $3,990,001 in disbursements, and $14,236 in cash on hand as of December 31, 2022.
2024 Election
Primary and General Election Outlook
While Bacon won Nebraska's second congressional district seat in 2022, he has a lot of competition in the upcoming election. In the primaries, Bacon faces off against two strong candidates, with Dan Frei gaining lots of traction in the state. Frei poses a real threat to Bacon and his campaign. If Bacon wins the primaries, he is still not out of the woods. Democratic candidate Tony Vargas lost to Bacon by fewer than 6,000 votes in 2022 and is running against him again in 2024. Vargas is currently the only Democrat running for Nebraska's second congressional district in 2024.
"The election in 2022 really represented where we're at from the district because the independents broke down the middle and the intensity was the same on both sides," Bacon told USA Today in an interview. "I just have to work hard; it's gonna be competitive no matter what."
Bacon's lack of support for former president Donald Trump may also hurt his chances in the primaries, as most GOP voters in Nebraska tend to prefer candidates with more loyalty to Trump than Bacon has.
2020 Presidential Election
Bacon supported Trump in both the 2016 and 2020 presidential elections. He has since said he does not support Trump for president in the GOP presidential primary.
Trump has called Bacon "bad news" in unrelated visits to Nebraska in 2022.
Bacon was also one of 109 Republicans who opposed counting electoral college votes after the 2020 election.

Campaign Funds
Bacon's funding started strong, as his campaign raised $483,000 in the first quarter of 2023. Another $140,000 was transferred to Bacon's campaign from his federal political committee, bringing the total to $623,000. This is the most money Nebraka's second district candidates have raised in the first quarter of a non-election year. At the end of 2023, the Federal Election Commission filed an itemized list of Bacon's contributions and spending. The list is as follows:
